At the Sunshine Coast you’ll find a suburban enclave paved with seasonal fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices. Everyone in the neighbourhood can help themselves to a cabbage, a bunch of basil or a banana whenever they like. The founders reckon it’s keeping quite a few cars off the road (no more late-night dashes to the shops for a lime) and boosting community spirit and resilience, big time. The project has promise as a template to be rolled out just about anywhere – though here in Tassie we’re unlikely to have much luck with bananas.
